This is an independent information resource, not treatment guidance. Alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous; urgent symptoms require emergency medical care. The central question is not only whether a treatment might help, but whether it can be studied and delivered safely. A research digest, not a promise What the current evidence can and cannot say Early signal Ibogaine is being investigated for substance use disorder, including alcohol use disorder. Observational reports describe reduced drug cravings and withdrawal symptoms after ibogaine treatment, but alcohol-specific clinical trials remain limited. No established efficacy Anecdotal accounts and open-label research can generate hypotheses. They cannot establish that ibogaine therapy is effective for alcohol dependence, or show how it compares with established addiction treatment. Safety sets the threshold Potentially fatal cardiac adverse effects are central to any discussion of therapeutic potential. Safety evidence and efficacy evidence are different questions, and both matter for alcohol use disorder. A compound’s traditional history and its modern clinical evidence are related, but not interchangeable. Origins and scope What is ibogaine? Ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychoactive substance and indole alkaloid derived from the root bark of the Tabernanthe iboga plant. The iboga plant is native to Central West Africa, particularly Gabon, where Indigenous Bwiti spiritual practices have used iboga for centuries in rites of passage, healing ceremonies, and spiritual exploration. Traditional medicine use can involve raw root bark or powdered extract and may bring profound visionary or hallucinogen
